Do yours students have trouble identifying parts of speech?
Students use these cards and sort them according to their part of speech. Students then record their answers on the recording sheet, and check their answer with the answer key included. If students have trouble, I allowed my students to look up the words in a thesaurus so they could find synonyms if they were unsure of what the word on a card meant. I did not allow my students to use a dictionary because the dictionary would give them the part of speech, which would take away from the whole point of the activity.
I designed this activity as a small center idea to have my students review the main parts of speech; they had trouble identifying verbs from nouns, and nouns from adverbs, so on and so forth. My students were special education students who were below their grade equivalent peers, and I made something similar to this to use in my classroom for these kiddos. My students completed this activity, and over time, their parts of speech skills became stronger.
I hope you and your students will enjoy this small activity as much as my students and I did! :)
