This is a reading comprehension about Alain Robert, the man who climbs skyscrapers around the world - nicknamed the Human Spiderman!

Now Expanded and includes:
-The student worksheet
-Interactive PowerPoint show
-Interactive Crossword
-Interactive Quiz
-Interactive Gap-fill

This is a tough exercise - the vocabulary is quite difficult and students will spend quite some time checking on the vocabulary meaning before commencing on the reading. If you have a strong set of students, this should test them. It usually takes a couple of lessons to get through this worksheet. It's suitable for young teenagers for ELA or upper intermediate/lower advanced ESL learners.

First, there are 39 vocabulary words taken from the text that the students need to find the meaning of from their dictionaries (or memory as may be the case for some words). They circle or underline the correct choice (a,b, or c). The teacher may run the PowerPoint slides in parallel as it duplicates the worksheet and the answers may be advanced individually on mouse click (no need for the teacher to write anything!).

Once the students know or have this record of the meaning, they are ready to start the reading on page 2. The story is about the achievements and mishaps of Alain Robert, and the words that the students looked up on page one are found in the text. The story is a full page long. Once again, the story is shown paragraph by paragraph in the PowerPoint show, and all the vocabulary words are highlighted. On clicking the highlighted word, a synonym is revealed (or sometimes a little picture) to help the students.

Next, there are a total of 8 true or false questions to test students’ comprehension. The PowerPoint shows the questions and answers too, and gives explanation for why i't's true or false. I sometimes add open end questions on the whiteboard/projector to test them further if I have a particularly strong class.

Their understanding of the story is then further assessed by getting them to make a cartoon to re-tell the story chronologically in their own words through writing and pictures. A cartoon style template is provided for the students to fill in. Normally, I will record a score for this project.

The vocabulary is as follows:

1. to scale
2. skyscraper
3. passion
4. philosophy
5. although
6. to suffer
7. vertigo
8. despite
9. significant
10. disabled
11. solo
12. limit
13. achieve
14. goal
15. within
16. locked out
17. exterior
18. each
19. multiple
20. fracture
21. consider
22. giant
23. structure
24. the globe
25. bare
26. urban
27. career
28. characterise
29. expand
30. landmark
31. include
32. authorities
33. permission
34. exploit
35. onlookers
36. consequence
37. to arrest
38. various
39. enforcement

There are three extra interactive exercises. I use them as review a day or so after the cartoons are finished, to refresh the students about what they learned. The activities are:
-An interactive Crossword
-An interactive Gap-fill
-An interactive Quiz

I have used this worksheet with grade 12 (upper-secondary / high-school) ESL students and also with upper intermediate adult learners too. They enjoy the context and that they can follow the story once they know what everything means. I decorate the classroom with their cartoons.

The worksheet and PowerPoint are fully editable.
The PowerPoint and Interactive exercises can be used with IWBs if you use them.
I hope it is useful to you.
