This packet includes teacher notes for each activity as well as a resource section in the back with support materials. Teaching time will vary depending on student skill levels and class period durations. This may be used as a unit as a whole or broken up to use each piece as it fits into existing curriculum or as your students need.
I originally used this material as the writing curriculum for struggling students during Texas test prep (STAAR) intervention tutorials, but also integrated the lessons into my pre-AP English classes. It includes writing in both expository and persuasive forms. For the STAAR exam, students in 9th and 10th grade must write an expository (explanatory, informational) essay, and 10th graders must also write a persuasive (argument) essay.
This packet contains practice and prompts for both types of writing, including sample student persuasive essays. There are several additional persuasive prompts in the resource section that are formatted just like the STAAR prompts. I have given you more persuasive prompts because my students always have a harder time with this type of writing.
I began the packet with my simplified How to Write an Essay handout, which clarifies the structure of an essay for students.
