Need a quick, student-centered informal assessment for your middle school class? These mini standards-based Marzano scale rubrics are just the ticket! Use after an introductory lesson, mid-unit, or when prepping for a big test. Students complete a self-assessment by checking up to four statements with specific criteria for meeting or exceeding the standard. They check a statement to describe their confidence levels, too, allowing you to see at a glance the status of your class.
Use the hyperlinked Table of Contents to find the standard you will be teaching. Print as many copies as needed (5 exit tickets per page), and cut apart. You may find it convenient to keep a file folder or plastic zipper bag filled with tickets for the key standards identified by your district or team; having a supply on hand for those surprise walk-through observations can’t hurt!
The criteria on these exit tickets match the student-friendly text of my ELA Learning Scales. The top descriptor contains the most advanced skill and goes beyond the standard; the second line is meeting the standard; the third and fourth lines are prerequisite skills or knowledge leading to attainment of the standard. Ask students to check any lines that they feel they’ve achieved and to select the statement from the bottom row that best describes their confidence level.
You can also have students answer a question specific to the day’s lesson or write a question they are confused about on the back of the ticket.
Although this file contains exit tickets for every ELA standard to provide you plenty of options, I don’t recommend using these exit tickets every single day! Once a week or even every other week will provide opportunity for your students to assess their own progress without becoming bored with the procedure.
