Product Description
This set of Common Core ELA task cards and printables allow students to practice one of the key ELA Common Core Reading Standards for Informational Text.

• Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text. (RI.4.5)

Included in this set:
• graphic reference sheet (color and grayscale), sized for student journals
• 32 task cards
• task card answer sheet and key
• 2 two-page activity sheets (with scoring guides)

The printables consist of a journal-sized reference sheet and two different two-page worksheets that can be used to evaluate student understanding of nonfiction text structure. The reference sheet gives students an overview of six common non-fiction text structures, and provides a simple graphic representation of each text structure. The reference sheet is sized so that it will fit in a standard-sized journal. It will be useful not only when your students work on these cards, but anytime you have a discussion about non-fiction text structures.

Each of the 32 task cards has a short paragraph, written using a particular text structure. Students then identify the organizational structure demonstrated by the passage. You can have the students complete the cards on their own or in pairs, or even use them for a game of Scoot!

The two provided worksheets can be used to evaluate your students’ ability to analyze non-fiction passages to determine organizational structures. The worksheets are formatted similarly, though the passages on each are different – one is about the Mars rover Curiosity and the other is about the history of video games. You can use these activity pages in a variety of ways: pre-test/post-test, guided practice, homework, center assignments, or any other purpose that fits your teaching style or classroom routines.
