This standards-based product contains the Guy de Maupassant short story "The Necklace" and the fairy tale "Cinderella."

Students will practice analysis through 10 text-dependent multiple choice questions focused on central idea, characterization, and plot development in "The Necklace."

Students will practice close reading and annotation in order to complete a short, written response explaining how characterization and theme operate together to create mearning in "The Necklace."

Students will read "Cinderella" and complete a note-taking chart of important parallels between the fairy tale and "The Necklace."

Students will practice synthesis through a planning sheet that that asks them to identify commonalities between "The Necklace" and"'Cinderella." Students will then organize their ideas to show how the short story draws from the elements and themes of the fairy tale.
