Product Description

This is a response notebook type packet containing questions and activities to accompany Thanksgiving on Thursday, a book in the Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne. The notebook / packet can be used to teach throughout and/or accompany the Thanksgiving on Thursday book study. It could also be used during social studies classes or just for holiday fun!

Pages included are as follows:

-Cover sheet

-Similar cover sheet with a name space suitable for a student notebook / packet cover should the purchaser so choose

-K-W-L Sheet

-5 Question Sheets covering each chapter (3 questions per chapter; 2 chapters per sheet)

-2 Thanksgiving Extension Research Sheets (12 questions total for both pages combined)

-6 mentor sentence sheets including:

--Monday sheet – observations students notice about the sentence (i.e. what type of

sentence is it, are there phrases, etc.)

--Tuesday sheet – Students label the sentence with the correct parts of speech.

--Wednesday sheet – Students revise the sentence by using different and/or stronger words.

--Thursday sheet – Students write an imitation sentence based upon the format of the original.

--Friday sheet – Students complete an editing assessment sheet for the week.

--alternate sheet containing 4 boxes if having Monday – Thursday’s work on one sheet is preferred

--Sarah Josepha Hale sheet – writing

Students pretend they are Sarah Josepha Hale and write about their letters to U.S.

Presidents over the years trying to get Thanksgiving recognized as a national holiday.

--3 I am thankful for… sheets – writing / coloring

-The first sheet is a turkey with 8 feathers each stating “I am thankful for” where students can write the things for which they are thankful.

-The second sheet is a set of 8 additional feathers stating “I am thankful for” if students have more to say/write. These could be placed in between/behind the original 8 for a more full-looking turkey! These feathers are a little longer also so they would be able to be seen between/behind the others.

-The third sheet is a set of 8 additional feathers which are blank. That way there is room to add feathers if desired and make them as creative as the teacher/students desire. These feathers are a little longer also so they would be able to

be seen between/behind the others.

-Completed turkeys could be colored and cut out as I made sure the outlines were pretty thick and dark to aid in that.

--I am grateful for… sheet – writing/drawing/coloring

This sheet has 4 boxes where students can either write or draw (or both) the things for which they are grateful.

--Meet Jack sheet – writing

Students can use their imaginations to be newspaper reporters

interviewing Jack about his Thanksgiving mission.

--Meet Annie sheet – writing

Students can use their imaginations to be newspaper reporters

interviewing Annie about her Thanksgiving mission.

--Priscilla sheet – writing

Students use their imagination and creativity to write about Priscilla’s life in America.

-Author Sheet - writing

Students use their imagination and creativity to pretend they are back in the year 1620 coming to the New World aboard the Mayflower. They can describe their journey, thoughts, feelings, and more!

-Thanksgiving Grammar Fun – parts of speech

Students come up with and write as many Thanksgiving nouns, verbs, and adjectives as they can.

-Story Elements Sheet for students to record the characters, setting, problem, key events, solution, and theme of the story

-Word Search

-Finger Feedback! -- Here students can rate the book and explain their thoughts about it by rating it anywhere from 1 – 5 fingers and then explaining the reasoning behind their choice.

-Answer Keys
--for each of the chapter questions (chapters 1-10)
--for the Thanksgiving Extension Sheets

--for each day of the Mentor Sentences *(Guides for Mon-Thursday are suggested answers. Students’ answers may vary, and answer keys for the Mentor Sentence sheets are not meant as all-inclusive answer sheets.)

--for word search

*All answer keys are included as guides, but of course class discussions could provide additional answers. :o)

Creativity can take students in all directions with this packet as they could present to the class how/why they made their choices and also allows a great opportunity for role playing and class presentations as students could be actors/actresses with their work.

I have tagged this as compatible with certain ELA Common Core State Standards for 2nd and 3rd grades, but readers of other elementary grades would enjoy this book also. :o)

I included the extension sheets for Thanksgiving as extra research and information seeking opportunities for students both in the library and online.
I hope you enjoy the packet and it will be helpful to you and your students!

***Good for one classroom use only. Please respect my work and do not distribute unless additional licenses are purchased. :o)
