Studies have shown that students learn and remember words more quickly when they are presented to them on round cards ( as opposed to our regular rectangular flashcards). Additionally, certain colors help us access certain parts of our brain. The colors blue and green help access the language arts and science parts of our brains, while orange and yellow help us access the social studies, math and community parts of our brains.
Since 2012, I have been using self- created round cards in all the subjects I teach (math, language arts, science, social studies) for all my struggling students,as flashcards, and also as my word wall cards.
Whether or not the "science" behind them works, the kids love them, expecially once they are printed on colored card stock and laminated.
1. Print the ELA vocabulary cards on green (not neon or dark) card stock. cut the words out as you use them and have them laminated so you can use them year after year.
2. Print the ELA vocabulary cards out for teams/ groups or for a literacy center to use as flashcards. These can be printed on regular green paper.
