This fun creative writing activity is sure to lead to some surprise twists and turns. Just photocopy the two sheets onto one double sided page and give one to each student. Allow five minutes for everyone to start their story, then ask them to add their final lines in the next box and fold their papers over, passing them on to the next students. The next students will continue the story in the new box, without knowing what came before. After six rotations ask the final contributor to bring the story to some kind of conclusion. Then let everyone pass the stories back to the original owners for a hilarious read. If you have extra time, let students walk around and trade stories so they get to see several.
This is a great stand-alone activity. You can use it in any free half an hour or leave it for a sub.
You can also use it in conjunction with a writing or vocabulary unit. For example, if you are working on sensory details, request that students use a lot of sensory detail in their writing. If you want to practice the vocabulary for the week, invite students to include at least two vocabulary words in each section of the writing.
