This Word of the Day packet is a resource to help expose both ELD students and all students to vocabulary that will help in their language development. This packet stems from using the Word of the Day -Tier 2 Vocabulary packet in my classroom. After implementing the program in my classroom and finding that my ELD students were greatly benefiting from the practice and discussion, I decided to repackage it to address the needs of teachers looking for ELD resources.
The words in this packet provide students with a wider range of vocabulary then they would get on the playground or even in the classroom. The exposure to new words is important. It allows them to begin using the words as part of their overall vocabulary and also helps them with reading comprehension.
This packet includes 170 vocabulary word cards, a display poster, and a student book template.
*Note: This packet is probably more beneficial to students who have some English language development vs a beginning English learner. It is hard for me to say, since my students range from early intermediate to early advanced. If I were using this packet for beginning learners I would still introduce the words, but I would probably interchange everyday vernacular with the higher level words. For example, I would introduce the word “amusing,” but then I would use the word “funny” in more of the discussion in order to help students understand and use both words.
