Learning the names and symbols of elements can be made into a fun teaching activity by making "Bingo" out of the lesson. Kids will love getting a handful of beans, buttons or other objects to mark the cards as they go. The game you choose to play is entirely up to the teacher, or as a choice of the students. You may call out names of elements while the kids identify the symbols. You may call out atomic numbers, metals only, gasses only, fill the card, etc. You may want to identify properties while kids find symbols that match. The list of possibilities is as long as your creativity. You'll find them wanting to play the game over and over, and they will become more able to identify and match elements names and symbols. You may want to include my "Periodic Chart Packet" for use in identification. I guarantee a great time and valuable learning experience for even the most challenging students.
