Before I begin teaching ROMEO AND JULIET, I assign either individual students or groups of students an Elizabethan topic to research. Groups depend upon my class sizes.
I find that when students know something about the time period in which the literature takes place, they can better connect to what they are reading. Often, the presentations are excellent, and we really do get a flavor of the ELizabethan time period.
Students must create a presentation format using either Powerpoint, Keynote, or some other media. Imovie has been used in the past. They then must convey the information to their classmates. Presentations must be 5-10 minutes in length and must contain visuals.
The food groups have created ELizabethan foods for their classmates to try. I have had Fashion groups put on ELizabethan fashion shows. We take notes during the presentations, and then I create a 100-point test pertaining to the presentations. I allow students to use any notes they have taken. The projects have been a huge success for my 9th graders. Enjoy. Dennie
