How this ELL Newcomer resource will help your students:
The work that you give your students in your lessons will include content specific academic vocabulary words. Words that are integral to the assessment of the students’ understanding of the concepts being taught in your content area. You have taught these words and the students are expected to know them and reflect that knowledge on your assessment. (These are Tier Three words). It is Tier Two words that will impede the performance of ELLs on seat work and assessments- words you may use that have no connection to the content that you are trying to assess. These are academic non-subject specific words. They are words that we assume students know but are not specifically taught. These words appear across subject areas and their curriculums. (Examples: draw, write, color, check mark, label, circle, mark with an “X”, underline, on top, under, over, next to, between, describe….) The following activities will help you reinforce these words after you have done a lesson on them. These pictures are also designed for ELL Newcomers who need to learn the different areas of the school environment.
