Little Language Learners’ Science Curriculum and Resources meets the academic and language needs of ESL students in grades K-2 and ELL Newcomers grades K-5. This curricula was designed to develop English Language Proficiency (ELP) through the content area of science. Grade level expectations will be met while academic language skills are developed by using the engaging and rigorous activities. Experiments, differentiated science notebooks, concept poems, art activities, and concrete experiences are used to teach the unit’s concepts and build content vocabulary. Vocabulary and conversations skills are also taught using Direct Instruction vocabulary cards. Basic literacy skills are taught through stories and poems that employ the topic’s theme.
A framework is provided for each thematic unit. The frameworks are a step by step breakdown on how to plan the sheltered instruction content units. Samples from the units are given to exemplify assessment, developing background knowledge, activating prior knowledge, vocabulary development, comprehensible input and enabling language production. Lesson planning templates are provided.
The thematic unit topics in this curriculum are science staples in the early primary grades: Plants, Insects, Sea and Pond Life, Farm Animals, Weather and Seasons, and Food Groups.
