These SMART Board activities are perfect for beginner-level ELL students. I tried to incorporate as many sheltered instruction methods as possible. The file can be used with whole group instruction or as a center. For the first time this year, my school had a “newcomer” class that met during first hour each day. All these activities were tried out by the students in that class and then edited to include their suggestions.
Activities include clicking the picture to hear the English word, matching the word to the picture, dragging and dropping letters to spell the words, and writing the word after arranging the letters. Once I decided on the activities I wanted to use, I used each activity with a different set of words. The categories I used were school tools, animals, clothing, food, and toys. Each category is available separately, with the Food file being offered for free so that you can try it out. I also compiled all the categories into one file sold at a discount. This compiled file includes some bonus activities that are at a little higher level.
