This unit was designed with high school English Language Learners in mind, but could be used for any level. The unit scaffolds compare and contrast essay writing by using non-fiction topics of interest to students. The overarching theme of this unit is the story of Pocahontas and the Jamestown settlers. It can/should be combined with a non-fiction book/articles about that history, which are readily available at any library or on the internet.
This unit includes a vocabulary list, several basic writing assignments, as well as relevant grammar exercises. It also includes discussion questions to get your students talking and practicing that compare and contrast language. Assessments are also included, in the form of writing assignments.
