Want a way to connect with incoming students you meet at the end of the school year and then reconnect when you meet again in the fall? Attached is an activity to give these students on "transition day". It is a mini book log in the shape of a key to encourage them to unlock the key to reading by doing summer reading. When they return in the fall, they bring in the completed key which will unlock the classroom treasure chest for a prize. When I can, I include a small book to send home with it in case they don't have access to books for the summer. It is a Word doc so can be edited or modified. I typically print it double-sided on yellow card stock for durability and cut it out to resemble the key shape. It's been a positive way to hook them into books and get them excited to come to my classroom the next year. Please leave feedback - enjoy!
