Here is a 16-slide Powerpoint presentation purposely crafted for integration within the New York State Common Core Module 1 for 5th Grade study of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is a wonderful extension activity that your students will be able to relate to and make connections with their discoveries from their analysis of the U.D.H.R. Seven (7) slides depict the harsh realities of child labor prior to the "Declaration of Dependence" in pictorial form. All slides of the era feature child labor in a black and white format. After a blank page, students are presented with five (5) slides showing modern children happily enjoying a non-child labor environment. All slides of the modern era are in color. Students will determine the contrasts between the two periods by analyzing the two different sets of slides and recording their "noticings" in a graphic organizer. They will then write an essay using their "noticings" to reflect upon the impact that the "Declaration of Dependence" had on child labor practices. Used in conjunction with the Word file mentioned below, this activity will excite and enlighten your students. The connections my students made to the UDHR were absolutely fantastic!
