ENGAGE-Ready to Learn
In this resource you will find 5 Games and Activities that Teach Social Emotional Learning with Fun! This standards-based resource is designed to provide students from PreK to 2nd Grade with the essential skills needed to be ready to learn in the classroom. It covers the essential executive functioning skills such as listening, attending, following directions, managing impulses, and using words to communicate. Each lesson is presented with visual teaching guides and activities to help younger students grasp critical social emotional concepts that impact their ability to be ready to learn in the classroom.

How to Use:
Research has shown that when social-emotional skills are incorporated into daily practice in fun ways it increases student learning and connections (CASEL, 2012). This program is also aligned to the lessons presented in the Second Step® Curriculum. Teachers can use this as an extension to the activities being taught in the classroom. Social Workers, Counselors, or Psychologists can use this as a small group intervention to build on the skills already being taught in the classroom. While all students can benefit from learning strategies to strengthen executive functioning skills, some examples of students needing more support are those with ADHD, autism, emotional difficulties, and learning disabilities.

Why teach Executive Functioning Skills in the Classroom?
Executive functioning skills are the basis for planning, organizing, initiating, and following through with tasks. These are skills we rely on students to use every day. This unit teaches young students the ready to learn skills such as listening, attending, following directions, managing impulses and using words to communicate. Student who struggle in this area are often very hard to teach in the classroom. These students need explicit teaching and practice of these executive function skills to be more successful in school.
