PLEASE NOTE: One lockbox with a hasp and three locks are required for this activity. You will not be able to use this resource without the following supplies.

1. large lock box with latch
2. hasp (or other method for attaching locks to box)
3. key lock
4. 3 digit number lock
5. 4-letter lock

The students will also need access to a computer (Chromebook, iPad, etc) that has Internet access in order to research the names of four presidential dogs.

A color printer will be needed for most of the printable pages in this resource.

In this Lockbox Challenge, students will need to break into a box to save the doggy daycare.

Miss Sally Poochner is a dog lover. She has dreamed of opening her own doggy daycare ever since she was a little girl. Finally, everything has fallen into place, and thanks to her entire life savings, Miss Poochner was able to set up her dream doggy daycare, Pooch Palace. Today is a very important day because the doggy daycare licensing inspector is coming to tour the facilities. Without his seal of approval, Pooch Palace will be shut down. Sally has everything in tip-top condition, but she got locked out of the building with only an hour left before the inspector arrives. Several of the daycare doggies are inside! A spare key is in the box. Get it out quick before Sally gets in trouble and Pooch Palace becomes history!

There are 3 different challenges included in this resource. Each task will require logical reasoning and critical thinking skills. All the printable materials for each task are included, with an easy-to-read reference sheet that outlines the lock codes and setup for each challenge. The following challenges are included:

1. Daycare Doggy Logic- Students will solve a logic puzzle to determine the arrival time and favorite playtime activity for each of four daycare doggies. This information, combined with a few more clues, will reveal the hiding place for the key lock.

2. Puppy Dog Problem- Students will solve a complex math problem involving addition and 2-digit multiplication. The final solution, when multiplied by 4, will open the 3 digit number lock.

3. Morse Code Puzzler- Students will use Morse code to decipher a secret message that reveals a hiding spot for the last puzzle. This puzzle will involve research about the names of four presidential dogs. Letters from the dog names will need to be unscrambled to reveal the word for the 4-letter lock.

Answer keys are included for each challenge.

The initial setup of a Lockbox Challenge is a bit of a time investment, but I have worked hard to make it as easy as possible for you with detailed directions that include pictures. Once the challenges are set up and the locks are in place, you will be amazed by the level of engagement, degree of teamwork, and problem solving that unfolds. This makes it all worth while. :-)

Reward certificates (in black line or color) are included to place inside the box.
