Students get "yes" examples and "no" examples of a concept and take notes on important characteristics in order to define the concept on their own. I use this sheet at the beginning of the year with my freshman, but it can be used with any grade level. I take students to our media center to have them fill it out. It helps them pay attention to text features while also becoming comfortable with finding books in the media center.

Film Analysis Organizer
This is a film analysis worksheet that can be used with any film. Students analyze visual and thematic elements. Students do not need any special knowledge of film production to complete the sheet.

Othello Read Aloud Assignment
I use this sheet as a sign up for students to read aloud. It lists the all reading parts for Act 3, scene 3 until the end. I give students a small grade for reading and ask everyone to read at least once. Signing up in advance helps ease some anxiety for students.

Comparing/Contrasting The Canterbury Tales & Sir Gawain and The Green Knight
This is a graphic organizer for comparing The Canterbury Tales and Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. I use this in my medieval unit for British Literature.

Citing Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism Review
I use this powerpoint to review plagiarism and MLA citation with my students, and can be used with 9-12 students. It reinforces when to cite, focusing on paraphrased/summarized material with examples.

Introducing Satire-- Concept Attainment Activity
This is one of my students' favorite activities. I use it to introduce a unit on about satire. Using the concept attainment strategy, students see examples that are satire, as well as examples that are not satire and have to take notes on the differences. The powerpoint includes all necessary instructions to complete the lesson.

Satire Presentation Assignment
Students are given a rubric and instructions for creating their own satirical powerpoint presentations on various high interest subjects. This assignment works well after reading "A Modest Proposal" or any other work of satire.

Emily Dickinson and Ralph Waldo Emerson success comparison
This activity provides students with two opposing viewpoints on what success in life is. The students will compare two poems on the topic of success and complete a writing activity.

Antigone Project Options with Rubric

This is a set of 7 vocabulary quizzes that I use with seniors. I usually give them one word a day as a class warm up, and ask them to use the word in a relevant sentence. Then I quiz them every 2 weeks. Each quiz contains matching, sentence completion, and sentence writing.

Shakespeare's Julius Caesar Critical Thinking Ranking Activity
This activity can be used after Act III or at the end of the play. Students have to think critically about who was the most power in the play. This worksheet includes instructions and a character list. This usually gives rise to an interesting discussion.

Poetry Circles Group Assignment
This is a modified version of literature circles. I have students work in groups of 6 to read and analyze poems. This lesson could last one day or two weeks depending on how many poems each group reads. The assignment can be used for any poem. 20 Reader Response Journal/Discussion Prompts
This is a PDF with 20 reader response journal or discussion prompts on slides that can be used with any short story or novel.

Creative writing/ literacy assignment (werewolves)
This worksheet can be used with any short story, novel, or narrative poem. I use it as an extension activity, or a make-up assignment. Students imagine an alternative ending for literature, and sketch that ending.
