ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FOOD PRODUCTION MINI-UNIT

This unit aims to provide an overview of the environmental impact of food production. It covers land degradation, impact of food production on water, animal agriculture and climate change.

The unit is framed by a 20-slide PowerPoint: 14 slides contain notes to take down and 5 slides direct students to activities.The PowerPoint has embedded teaching notes, suggestions for class discussion points and additional activity suggestions.

Students will require 1-1 internet access to complete some of the tasks within this mini-unit.

The mini-unit contains five activities:
-Easter Island case study: students are given information about land degradation on Easter Island and asked to consider why land management mistakes are repeated over time.
-Crop challenge game: this board game tests students on their knowledge of land degradation.
-Colorado and Murray-Darling river basins activity: students compare how food production has impacted on these two river basins.
-Go Vegan and save the world: students investigate whether global veganism could solve world hunger.
-Climate hot map activity: students use the climate hot map website to investigate how climate change has impacted on food production in different locations.

Time allowance
The mini-unit is designed to take approximately 13-15 lessons of class time (3 weeks), with the assumption that a lesson is 50 minutes long. This may vary depending on the age of your students.

Documents are in PDF format, PPT needs to be opened as 'read only'.

Whilst this mini-unit can be used across a variety of curriculum contexts, it has been designed in line with the Australian Curriculum Level 9/10 Geography: Biomes and Food Security. It specifically addresses the content descriptor: The interconnection between food production and land and water degradation; shortage of fresh water; competing land uses; and climate change, for Australia and other areas of the world (VCGGK135)
