Ethos, pathos, and logos are easiest to notice in commercials and ads because they are persuasive strategies. This project is meant to deepen students' understandings of the concepts by allowing students to utilize what they already know about ethos, pathos, and logos and apply that information to an advertisement. It's a great addition to any persuasive or argumentative writing unit.
This mini project was completed by my freshman English students over a period of three class days and one weekend. The download is a rubric/grading sheet which includes a summary of the task, a rubric for judging, and the option to let students compete for homework passes or extra credit by winning in one of the three categories listed in the header.
Students sometimes have a hard time coming up with products to advertise, so I would list several options and confine students to those particular options.
Whether students have a visual aid or not is optional, but usually more fun than looking at just plain old written ad copies and allows for a creative touch.
You may edit the sheet to suit your needs.
