Expressions and Equations - Writing, Evaluating and Solving
As teachers, we are always looking for opportunities to engage our students.
This activity taps into their interest in sports, particularly football.
Most students have heard of Fantasy Football and they may have taken part in a league or activity. This brings that experience into the math classroom.
Included are three worksheets that ask students to analyze the performance of quarterbacks, other offense players and defense teams using actual data from the 2015 NFL season. In doing so, they write and evaluate or solve expressions and equations.
There is also an extension activity (chart included) so students can select a team and collect the data. They can compete by comparing their points with classmates. You can even set up a tournament over several weeks. Your students will be practicing their math skills and enjoying it!
I LIKE THIS ACTIVITY because it requires students to carefully read and to extract data in order to answer the questions, an essential skill for success on assessments.
STUDENTS LIKE THIS ACTIVITY because it is all about football.
