This phonics intervention package targets the ER, UR, IR R-Controlled Vowel pattern. With a collection of multisensory activities, this phonics resource is compatible with an Orton Gillingham approach to teaching reading. It is designed for teaching in individual, group, or whole class English language arts settings.
Read Aloud Passage with Visualization
It includes a read aloud passage where students using their phonological awareness to detect the targeted sound. The passage includes descriptive language to facilitate visualizing and reading comprehension.
Brainstorming and Keyword
Activities also include prompts for brainstorming words with the R-Controlled ER, IR, and UR spellings and spelling and the selection of mnemonic devices to increase phonological memory of the sound.
There is a guided reading section of word lists that teachers can use to model and scaffold decoding words with the R-Controlled ER, IR, and UR spellings.
Phonological Awareness Tasks
As well, teachers are provided with scripts for phonological awareness tasks including manipulation and substitution of sounds and phonological memory. In addition, ER, IR, UR rhyming tasks asks students to connect rhyming words.
In addition, there is a spelling list where students are prompted to visualize the spelling of common ER, IR, and UR words to help with recall. One focus word, under, is used in a repeated spelling activity to increase recall of this keyword. As well, a targeted sound building activity focuses on 9 AR words, after, better, enter, fur, her, sir, girl, chirp, and surf.
Multisyllabic Word List
In order to challenge students to apply word attack or decoding strategies, a multisyllabic word list is provided.
To avoid automatic recognition of known words, a pseudo-word activity challenges students to discriminate between real and nonsense words.
Visual Shape Recognition
A word shape activity with EY words asks students to match the visual shape of the word to the outline, increasing their spelling recall.
A final reading game using the sequence format has students read from a large bank of EY words as they challenge a partner.
In order to ensure students are attending to the meaning of what they are reading, ER, IR, and UR true and false sentences are included.
Reading studies continuously support repeated reading as a powerful tool to increase students reading fluency. As a result, an ER, IR, and UR reading passage is included for students to practice their reading fluency on their own and with the support of a teacher. In addition, "one-breath" word lists of ER, IR, and UR words is provided for students to practice their word recall speed.
An ER, IR, and UR word search is included for students to work independently on increasing their visual discrimination skills.
To exercise students' form constancy skills, an ER, IR, and UR matching activity is provided.
