This is an ESL lesson that begins with a listening activity from YouTube describing some young men from the Congo coming to America to live. There are some things they may do that would be considered taboo in America, like eating butter or throwing garbage out the window. Second, there is a reading activity that discusses various taboos from around the world. In addition to this activity, conjunctions are underlined and a worksheet provided for conjunction practice. Third, there is a speaking activity where students look at ten taboos and decide how taboo they are, what makes them taboo and if they are also taboo in their native culture. Finally, a writing activity asks students to compare American taboos to their own culture taboos. For a dirty subject, this is kept tasteful and steers clear of sex and drugs in order to respect all students. However, if you feel it fit for your class, they can be easily added in the speaking section.
