This is a 3-4 week writing unit geared for ESL students who are beginners or newcomers. Most grammar used it in present tense, with some in the past tense (yet easily changed back to present tense). Some lessons and activities can be skipped depending on student needs. This writing unit is presented before I begin my Expository STAAR Unit that is geared for struggling learners and ELLs!

1. Adjective Writing (2 days)
- students write about pictures using 7 types of adjectives (size, shape, etc.)
- students write about a picture using adjectives
- students identify adjectives
- adjective suffixes
- writing about adjectives with pictures

2. Adverb Writing (2 days)
- adverb notes and identification
- writing adverbs with pictures
- students play matching game with verbs and adverbs/ draw pictures
- Kahoot
- adverb fill in the blank

3. Adverbs & Adjectives
- adverb and adjective sort (manipulative)
- fill in a mad lib
- create a mad lib

4. Sentence Structure
- write a complete sentence about picture with words/phrases
- create complete sentences with word bank

5. Complete Sentences
- notes
- subject and verb identification
- complete sentence identification
- worksheet

6. Compound Sentences (2 days)
- notes
- compound sentence identification
- sentence matching with ,and ,or ,but ,so
- reading and using conjunctions
- creating compound sentences
- using pictures to write compound sentence

7. Complex Sentences (2 days)
- notes
- subordinating conjunctions
- complex sentence identification
- matching game (manipulative)
- dice game with writing
- writing with subordinating clause in the beginning of the sentence
- completing sentence after a subordinating clause

8. Topic Sentences (2 days)
- notes
- identification of topic sentences
- matching topic sentences to body paragraphs (manipulative)
- multiple choice worksheet
- creating a topic sentence for body paragraphs

9. Supporting Details
- notes
- identifying what sentences don't support a topic sentence
- matching details to topic sentences, throwing out unnecessary details (manipulative)
- multiple choice worksheet
- creating another detail within a body paragraph

10. Brainstorm/ Pre-write
- notes on creating ideas
- teacher lead, pair work, solo work on creating details for 6 topic sentences

11. Turning a Pre-Write into Sentences
- teacher lead, pair work, solo work on writing for 6 topic sentences

12. 2 Prompts for Individual brainstorming and practice

13. Writing Round Table with brainstorming, transition words

14. Final solo writing- 3 prompts to choose from
