This is a 4 day mini unit on topic sentences for students needing to be taught topic sentences or a few days if students need only a refresher. The reading and writing expected at this level is intermediate to advanced.
Days 1-2 work mostly on identifying topic sentences and choosing the best topic sentence based on details. Notes and animated notes help students see the different types and placements of topic sentences. Matching and multiple choice activity of topic sentences to appropriate paragraphs.
Days 3-4 focus on creating topic sentences. Students read paragraphs at stations and write a topic sentence to place in a paper bag. As a class, topic sentences are shared and students write their favorite one. Analysis of topic sentences should happen naturally. Students read paragraphs and create their own topic sentence through a worksheet. Station/pair work or class work using 4 pictures on a slide will prompt students to write a topic sentence about the main idea. Dice activity also has students roll for a subject, and they write a topic sentence about that subject.
