The activities connect language learning with a science topic trending in the news. The Door to Hell in Turkmenistan is a geographical phenomenon. Two characters talk about a man-made gas crater that has been burning for more than forty years. Students practice reading a science passage about methane and how to read chemical formulas. I have included a set/introduction, group talk, and assessment and made them evident in case of surprise observations during the lesson. This is a good way for ESL students to practice both conversation skills as well as academic vocabulary. It is also good practice for special education students who need to practice reading skills. A link to a quizlet for vocabulary practice is included. Web search and information gap also included. Lots of scaffolding is built into the lesson. This will allow students of all levels to access complex academic concepts.
