This resource is designed for intermediate and higher level ESL and ELD students. It includes reading and writing prompt activities as well as vocabulary practice.
--- two pages of general vocabulary words about celebrations and holidays with a cloze activity;
--- a one-page reading passage about the Origins of Christmas accompanied by a page for vocabulary definitions and an activity where students correct statements to make them agree with the passage;
--- a one-page reading passage and short cloze activity about Diwali with a short list of vocabulary words;
--- a one-page reading passage and a True or False activity about Chinese New Year with a short list of vocabulary words (definitions could be done on separate paper);
--- an answer key provided for the comprehension activities
Included as well are three writing activities (the passages and writing activities are structured so that class discussion and other activities of your own can precede or follow any of the activities):
--- Students write about celebrations they enjoy by answering a series of prompts and then write a paragraph using the questions as a guide;
--- A organizer sheet for students to compose questions to interview other students about celebrations (this is particularly useful in a class with multiple nationalities);
---Two photos (of a birthday party and a bride with her bridesmaids) are included as writing prompts for students to describe and then write about a family celebration of their own.
