I use this personally with my ESL students in ALL grade levels but regular classroom teachers have found it really useful too. I have a small box or cups labeled with parts of speech : adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs and prepositional phrases. I cut apart these printables and put them in the boxes or cups. The kids draw one out of each and make a funny sentence. It reinforces all the parts of speech. Sometimes we color code them with crayons, sometimes we base a journal entry off them, sometimes we just illustrate them. That's why its so good for differentiated instruction. We usually talk about the sentence and if it is realistic or fantasy and why.
180 possibilities of journal sentence starters! In my classroom we even carry it over to moving the (s) to show more than one subject or move it to past tense or future tense (depending on what we are studying that week).
