ESOL students can use these strategies to better reflect on and comprehend text.Because there are 5 levels of strategies, it's a great way to provide differentiation (Level 1 contains 8 reading reflection strategies, Level 2 contains 11 reading reflection strategies, Level 3 contains 17 reading reflection strategies, Level 4-5 contains 23 reading reflection strategies).
These strategies encourage reflection while reading a variety of texts (novels, fables, myths, short stories, poems, autobiographies, biographies, and informational text, etc.). Each strategy specifies what type of text it can be used with.
Strategies and book logs can be used all year to show growth over the school year, handy at teacher/parent conferences, IEP, or RTI meetings.
Students may use the strategies with the whole class or independently, with different types of text.
After strategies have been taught to students, it becomes quite handy when there is a substitute. When students are already familiar with the strategies they can read independently and complete a book log in your absence.
