In conjunction with New York State ELA Module 1, this packet of student-centered worksheets supports the "triad discussions" that are the foundation of the analysis and discussion of Esperanza Rising. All the chapters have a "chapter focus" that guides the students towards finding supporting evidence of key discoveries within each chapter. Each triad worksheet provides the pages containing the relevant story evidence, and students must find and record that evidence on their sheets. Typically each member of the triad independently researches one of the three chapter sections that supports each chapter focus. Then they cooperatively share out within their triads/and or the whole class. We've had incredibly deep discussions within our triads and as a whole class working with our "triad talk worksheets". The students love the routine of using the sheets and the chance to work independently and cooperatively. Each chapter focus was diligently researched to provide students with appropriate discussion starters and opportunities to develop the essential skill of providing story evidence in the form of action and dialogue to support main ideas.
