This file is aimed at teaching students through modeling, to write about the theme of a story or novel. It uses templates that supply ideas for starting sentences, and instructions for each paragraph that give students guidance for organizing their ideas.
There are two templates here: a basic matrix for writing an essay about the theme of a piece of literature, and a more advanced version that extends the essay somewhat.
The basic template is two pages, and produces a four paragraph essay.
The advanced template is three pages, and produces a five paragraph essay.
Supporting the above are three pages of graphic organizers and a poster with common transitional words and phrases.
These mesh well with 6 + 1 traits: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, and Sentence Fluency.
I include two pages of teacher ideas for discussing theme with the students, and I've added a student checklist handout for writing improvements and conventions.
I've had great success with both these templates.
There is also a word search for early finishers.
