This lab allows students to experience first-hand, the expansion and contraction of gas, liquids, and solids. Students will use a ring and ball, two different types of linear expansion devices, and bimetal strips to test the expansion of metals. They will test real and home-made thermometers to test the expansion of liquids. A balloon attached to a flask and a "Hand Boiler" test the expansion and contraction of gasses. The lab is set up "scientific method" style, with kids following the procedure to arrive at desired conclusions. Questions along the way guide the thought process. IOt may take three class periods to complete and review the lab. However the kids will not get bored or fatigued. The lab is highly motivational, colorful, and fun. Answer key is included. Depending on the teacher's available equipment, the lab is easily able to be set up quickly and inexpensively. However, two pieces of equipment are my own design and may have to be constructed.
