"Exploration" is an instructional unit for introducing science into a self-contained classroom. Science is a key area of the curriculum often avoided or bypassed because of time constraints. Yet this essential content area can be incorporated naturally into the school day using simple science strategies. This collection utilizes a series of mini lessons to teach students how to investigate their world scientifically. These flexible and fun activities use resources and supplies that are readily available in the classroom. A follow-up assignment that supports each lesson can be used in class or distributed as homework. This 30-page packet includes assessment and alternative assessment tools that use short answers and open response questions to measure student learning. A mini wall poster is included. Although a variety of activities can be used to supplement this unit, they are not necessary in order for students to learn to use the four basic science strategies.
