This 6 - 8th grade Informational CC aligned Compare/Contrast essay allows the teacher to integrate other subjects into their students writing by picking a subject that is being studied and write a compare/contrast essay around the topic chosen. Students are guided through the entire writing process with appropriate rubrics. It is student and teacher evaluated and includes the following informational requirements to be graded:
1. Introduction - clearly states topic and organizes reasons and evidence for compare/contrast of the topic
2. Body - compares and contrasts the topic using facts definitions and details. Uses appropriate transitions to clarify the relationship of ideas and concepts
3. Conclusion - provides a concluding statement that follows the information presented
5. Vocabulary - uses precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform or explain the topic
6. Essay clearly and coherently written and formatted as specified by the teacher
7. Editing - using the writing process to include planning, drafting, revising, peer editing, and rewriting as required by teacher
8. Conventions - Thought was put into conventions
The scoring rubric should be presented to the students at the beginning of the lesson so students know what the expectations are, and that it will be self-graded before they turn it into the teacher for the final evaluation.
The scoring rubric takes the subjectivity out of grading and makes it even for all of the students. Students are able to decide the grade they would like to make on their paper.

1. The lesson plan which includes the objectives, parts of the narrative essay, and the steps for writing a narrative essay
2. Deciding on a topic organizer
3. The idea organizer including a sample organizer and a blank one
4. The compare and contrast list organizer example and a blank one
5. The paragraph organizer that guides the students through each paragraph with brief examples
6. The student-directed scoring guide
