WRITING DIRECTIONS: THE GREAT CARD TRICK CHALLENGE
PURPOSE OF ACTIVITY: Writing directions is often hard to keep kids engaged. This activity has been beefed up to keep kids engaged throughout the process Students will imagine that the company Extreme Magic has hired them to create a card trick using YouTube videos (YOU WILL NEED TO USE YOUTUBE TO FIND THESE VIDEOS. I HAVE THEM INCLUDED ON MY POWERPOINT VERSION) and a deck of cards. What student does not like a magic trick? Their tricks will be taught to one another through the written directions, and you can even hold a card trick show for the whole class and parents. Extreme Magic has told the students that whoever is able to write good directions will have their card trick featured in their next card trick book. (You make a classroom card trick book) This lesson includes a “letter from Extreme Magic”, graphic organizers, exemplars, voting sheets, Extreme Magic (Peer Review) sheet, explanation on what the kids are to do, a rubric, and even a final certificate “medal” for the students who succeed on getting their card tricks published. Throughout the whole process students learn to think like an expository (directions) writer and go through the writing process to create an expository writing (directions). This activity has been aligned to the Common Core standards.
GOAL: Produce an expository writing (directions) that:
a) Helps the students to understand the components of what to include in an expository (directions) writing.
b) Has been created using a graphic organizer/outline to keep track of their thinking.
c) Has been edited/evaluated by two other peers for content and clarity
d) Has been revised for clarity after the peers have evaluated.
e) Is composed into a final writing piece.
