The educational call for a new (or renewed) focus on the practice of teaching reading comes from the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The phrase for this new movement is Close Analytic Reading, CAR, or more commonly just Close Reading. The shifts of focus in the CCSS are calling for more of what can be addressed through close reading, in part due to the fact that students are to engage with more informational text through diverse content areas. With this in mind, the EZ Close Reading construct was created and tested. It is a means to create a reading format with which to close read in any subject area, at any grade level. It is highly effective, engaging for students, creates community amongst learners, and adds a tool to students skill set that gives them experience with (and ultimately confidence in) reading and understanding challenging text. Try it out. It is truly powerful for the success of students academically and in the real world.
The EZ Close Read Planning Template is a tool for planning your next close read. It guides you to hone your choice of text using the three lenses of Text Complexity, select appropriate Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary for maximizing the comprehension of the text, and craft your Text Dependent Questions with question starters. This is a super helpful tool for planning your close reading needs. For more information on close reading, see more EZ Close Read products including The EZ Close Read Process.
