This literature unit is for two of Jacqueline Woodson’s books, The Other Side and Each Kindness. If you haven’t read these books, I encourage you to do so. Both books contain powerful messages. These books have similar themes: bullying, equality, friendship, kindness, and courage and are great for comparing themes and teaching point of view.
This product contains a Power Point presentation with 34 slides that cover genre, theme, point of view, how characters change, and symbolism. Some of the slides ask a question and the answer will float in when you click the mouse. This gives time for discussion before the answer or possible answer is shown. There are 8 worksheets for students to practice these skills and an “act of kindness” activity. Answer keys are included.
The Common Core Literature standards addressed in this unit are:
2.2, 2.3, 3.2, 3.3, 3.9, 4.2, 4.3, 4.6, and 4.9.
Also included is a five day plan for implementing the unit.
