Students who struggle with claim, evidence, reasoning (CER) can practice with a set of short stories describing the discoveries of scientists like Louis Pasteur, John Snow, and Alexander Fleming. Students read a paragraph and highlight statements that represent the claim in one color, then highlight evidence statements in another color. Then they complete a statement to illustrate how reasoning is used to use the evidence to support the claim.
There are two versions of this activity. The "bee" version is for beginning students or ELL students and is easier because the statements to be highlighted are already underlined and the reasoning statement has three choices to choose from.
