The Rise of the Nation-State starts with a discussion about the Italian city states, then moves to the so-called "new monarchies" of England, France and Spain that emerge in the late 15th century in western Europe. The lecture has presenter notes and colorful images to help illustrate for the students the content and region in discussion. The key ideas emerging from this lecture help place context around the politics of the Medici and the publication of Machiavelli's Prince in the first half. In the second half, the lecture noes will lays important groundwork for the emerging courts life and increasing taxation to support the nobility and their lifestyle at court.
This lecture should be broken into two parts. I would recommend asking students to read my handout on Machiavelli's The Prince in-between.
