The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a systematic way to teach a child how to communicate with someone by handing the person a picture of what they want. This program was originally designed for children with autism but can be used for other non-verbal children as well. In the first phase of teaching, learning and understanding PECS, the child learns that if they hand an adult a picture, they will get what they want in return.
Keeping this in mind, we have created simple, yet small PECS cards, illustrating our top toy picks for an Early Interventionist, Therapist or teacher working in the field. Keeping these small cards looped on a ring and attached to the side of your toy bag, is a perfect way to introduce the PECS system to a child, but also establish rules and routines for making choices and requesting items they may want out of your toy bag during session time. Lessen tantrum behaviors and begin communicating with a child from the very first session!
