Early Numeracy Chart - for teaching Place Value!
This innovative product has turned a traditional teacher staple into a mathematical tool that is aligned to the Common Core and other state standards. It is a more conceptually logical representation of the relationship between numbers and place value. It helps students experience more concretely how the value of a number increases as the Early Numeracy Chart goes up. This concept is intuitively logical, similar to other examples, such as a glass of water getting filled goes up, height goes up as age increases or time passes, and a bar graph goes up as more objects are represented.
This simple adjustment has a powerful impact on how students are able to think about number value: the value of numbers go up the higher they appear on the Early Numeracy Chart. The numbers go down as the numbers decrease. This is a vast improvement on the traditional chart, where the higher the value of a number, the lower it is found on the chart. This contradiction in logic contributes to the lack of understanding that we see many students have about number sense.
The Early Numeracy Chart is a powerful tool for addressing several CCSS Mathematical Standards and Practices.
