Product Description

The 8th Grade U.S. History course has so many terms and ideas that students must learn that flash cards can be a very effective teaching tool. This set includes 18 terms that the students must learn from the Early Republic unit, and a student tracking sheet that students can use to stay accountable of their learning and their focus their efforts.

Ways to use these flash cards:

  • Individual study aides: Print one set out for each student to take home and study on their own. The Student tracking sheet can be used by parents to quiz their student and turn in at the end of the week as a homework grade.

  • Cooperative learning: Print one set of flash cards for each group of two or four. The students then quiz each other for 3-5 minutes each class period as part of a warm up. The student tracking sheet can be personalized with each group member's name and turned in at the end of the activity for student accountability and data purposes.

  • Games: If you play review games in your class like Trash Can Basketball, Beer Pong or Around the World, these cards can be used as the questions. It is a great way to keep the class engaged (with a student leader) while you pull small groups.

  • Building Connections: Print out a set of flash cards for each group of four. Instruct the students to randomly pick one card each, then the students must find connections between the terms and explain how they are the same or they are different. This will activity will incorporate higher-level thinking and help the students remember the information. Also because each card has a definition on the back the students can remind themselves about what they have already learned in class.

  • Entry or Exit Tickets: Use the cards as the students enter or exit the room, if they get it right they can leave, if they do not then they have to go to the back of the line.

  • End of year review: This resource is a part of a bundle that includes all units in a U.S. History class. Each set of flash cards has a unique border to help identify the cards. Buy the bundle, then mix the cards, the students must identify the era that the term comes from. Print a set of covers, to be used as an answer key.

  • End of year review, "Beer Pong": Get a set of 10 red plastic "solo cups" and write one era of U.S. history on the cup with a sharpie. Fill the cups half-way with water. The students form groups and each group takes a turn trying to get a ping-pong ball in the cup. When the group makes it in a cup use the flash cards from that unit to quiz the team. Each question they get right is one point.

  • End of year review, stack the cups: Use the same set of 10 "solo cups" with the eras written on them, mix up the cards from different eras. When you call a term the students must make a cup pyramid with the correct era on top.
