Explanation: Earned time is time when students get to choose from a menu of options of what they would like to do. For example, earned time could be minutes of recess, computers, games, reading books, meditating, etc. Earned time tokens are used as a positive reinforcement system to motivate students and recognize them for their excellent effort. Possible uses include setting goals with students to complete a set amount of work in order to earn a token (i.e., 15-mins of work earns token). Students may then turn in their token for earned time. Another use may be giving students a set number of tokens at the start of the day. When students are asked to complete an assigned task or are in the middle of completing an assigned task, they may ask to use one of their tokens as a break from the assignment. This will help students notice when they are reaching frustration tolerance and begin to be proactive in asking for a break. So that this privilege is not overused or abused, teachers may determine an amount of tokens student receive at the beginning of the day (i.e., three 2-minute tokens). Once the tokens are used, students know the next step is to ask for help, as there are no more breaks to be had.
