Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to integrate environmental literacy into your classroom and not only celebrate our wonderful planet, but highlight the crucial need for us to take action to protect our natural resources. As our understanding of how human actions are destroying our planet deepens, the need for a generation of youth who are proactive in environmental protection is more important than ever before.
Within this resource students will engage in fun activities, learn about threats to Earth’s environment and explore how people are taking action. Templates to guide a student-directed action project are included.
This resource is divided up into three sections:
♦ Introductory Activities: Reading comprehension activity; “How Environmentally Friendly Are You?” Quiz; Vocabulary Cloze activity; Word search; Crossword puzzle; Earth Haiku and; “Main Idea and Details” interactive activity (What are the threats to Earth’s environment?)
♦ How Can We Take Action?: Action brainstorm; “Increase your Green Power” QR Code research activity; “Prince EA” YouTube activity; Speech by Severn Cullis-Suzuki YouTube link with activities (identifying persuasive techniques)
♦ Action Project: Templates to guide a student-directed action project to share their knowledge about Earth Day and promote environmental awareness and action.
