I wrote the Earth Day song “Be Green” to empower children to make a difference--and also to teach them to think logically. I begin by telling children the meaning of “being green:” We should “care for the earth, and keep it clean.” Next, children learn four ways that they can immediately make a difference: Grow plants, be responsible with trash, conserve water, and conserve energy. I end the song by reviewing what we have learned.

This song meets the level of rigor recommended in the Common Core Standards, and the writing activities meet or exceed Common Core Standards.
The packet is designed to meet the needs of pre-K through second grade children. Use Earth Day pictures, unlined stationery and oral lessons with young children. Use writing activities with older children. Guide more advanced children to write 6-paragraph essays including a main idea paragraph, 4 supporting detail paragraphs based on the big ideas in the song, and a wrap-up paragraph. Even many kindergarten children will be able to accomplish this with assistance, if they focus on one paragraph per day.
The last section of this packet features printables and games. This section includes more ideas on saving the earth, such as stopping pollution, protecting the ocean, and saving endangered animals.
