Earth Day Math, Earth Day common core aligned Math Mystery (Grade 2) “Case of The Litterbug”.
NO PREP, just print and go! Your students will be engaged and motivated by this fun detective story, which also encourages critical thinking as they must reason their way through eliminating litterbug suspects. These NO PREP worksheets are common core aligned and are great for practice and review.
There is an optional video hook that can be used to introduce your students into the activity.

NEW - Editable Suspects list added to the packet. This way you can change the suspect names and alter the mystery outcome. There are also two alternative pre-made lists you can use instead. This is a great option if your students have already done this mystery story before and you need to change the mystery answer.

- Clue 2: Making 65 (fill in the missing number) - addition and subtraction
- Clue 3: Balancing Subtraction Equations (1-digit and 2-digit numbers)
- Clue 4 Worksheet: Properties of 2D & 3D Shapes (counting edges, vertices and faces - visuals provided)
- Clue 5: Adding multiples of 10 and 100
- A suspect declaration sheet that includes a clue completion checklist and a teacher check off as solved/try again.
- Answer sheets for each clue plus a color coded guide to the elimination process of the suspect list.
- Printable awards to give to students who solve the case and catch the litterbug!
How long will this activity take?
Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I highly recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue."
