This engaging activity puts a fun spin on reviewing the five author's purposes for writing! Author's Purpose is a concept that I have to revisit with my students throughout the year, so I created this version to do with my students at the beginning of April- right before state testing! It also makes a creative bulletin board or school hallway display for Earth Day.
Students will read five short passages related to Earth Day and/or caring for the environment. This version includes the more comprehensive FIVE author's purposes. (Get PIE-ED!) (If your students only learn persuade, inform, and entertain, however, you can easily just delete the other two passages from the packet when you make your copies.)
I created this because I wanted my upper elementary students to take author's purpose a step beyond the basic three (persuade, inform, and entertain). Many multiple choice tests add a fourth purpose as a choice, and when I only focused on the basic three, I wasn't adequately preparing my students for the tests.
Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.)
